The conference series – originally “Scandinavian Research Seminar on Information Modelling and Database Management” – started in 1982 and had aim to provide forum for Scandinavian database researchers to meet each other. In 1988 an co-operation initiative between Japan and Finland extended the geographical scope to cover Japan; the conference was called “Joint Scandinavian Japanese seminar on Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases”. The term “seminar” indicated its interaction and collaboration intensive atmosphere. The practical operations were then organized by professor Ohsuga in Japan and professors Hannu Kangassalo and Hannu Jaakkola in Finland. A couple of years later the geographical scope expanded to cover Europe (European Japanese …) and later other countries (International …). In 1995 the term “Seminar” was replaced by “Conference” to indicate its established position in the map of international conferences of this important research area. In spite of that the conference has still been able to maintain its tradition as a workshop type meeting of researchers – discussion, time enough for presentations and limited number of participants (50) / papers (30).
